Picking Your Poison

She spills her life onto him
expecting him to carry the load;
her mule without consent.

Even though her mouth dribbled
all secrets and lies, they were the only
lips onto which he’d kiss; Ruby red and
the most forbidden of fruit.

She implored and beckoned him with
dough eyes to see the other side;
The edges of her negativity cut him deep
in all the right places.
